Officer Assist
Overview
Officer Assist is a companion app for police officers, designed to provide real-time access to penal codes and training resources using an AI. The goal was to create an intuitive, efficient, and modern user experience that allows officers to quickly retrieve information while in the field.
Working under a tight 2-week timeline, my focus was on UX/UI design for the AI companion, ensuring that interactions were clear, fast, and reliable for officers who need quick answers. Since AI-driven law enforcement tools aren’t widely available, I conducted extensive research into AI-powered apps across different industries, adapting best practices to suit the needs of law enforcement.
My Role
Led UX/UI design for the AI companion, focusing on usability and efficiency.
Conducted a competitive analysis of AI-driven apps to inform interaction patterns.
Designed high-fidelity prototypes and interaction flows based on modern mobile UX patterns.
Collaborated with client stakeholders, who provided user personas and key user needs.
1. AI Interaction in a High-Stakes Environment
Challenge: Officers need immediate, clear answers without the ambiguity often found in AI-generated responses.
Solution: Designed a structured AI interface that presents concise, formatted answers with quick actions (e.g., copy text, expand response, or flag for review).
Design Challenges & Solutions
Designing AI for a Non-Consumer Use Case
Challenge: Unlike ChatGPT-style apps, law enforcement tools require high trust and usability.
Solution: Implemented clear source attribution, confidence indicators, and category-based queries to ensure officers feel secure relying on AI responses.
No Public Precedent for AI in Law Enforcement UX
Challenge: With no similar products to benchmark against, I had to blend AI best practices with real-world officer needs.
Solution: Analyzed AI apps from major tech and consumer tools to create a design framework that balances speed, accuracy, and usability.
Key Features
AI Chat Interface, simple, structured replies tailored for penal code lookups.
Officer optimized, high contrast and large fonts for high visibility.
Mobile-first UI, designed with large touch targets for field use.
Scalable for future enhancements, the UI is designed to integrate training resources, voice commands, and more.
Final Thoughts & Takeaways
Since this was such a short ui/ux sprint and the given the subject matter, I don’t have visibility into the final implementation. However, the project provided some key takeaways.
Designing AI for law enforcement requires balancing speed, accuracy, and trust.
There is room for modern AI interaction patterns to adapt to professional use cases.
